Workshop - Preparing & Releasing Wombats (NOTES)
Written by Website Administrator
On 17 May 2008 45 wildlife carers from South Eastern NSW and Victoria met in Braidwood, to exchange ideas and seek better ways to release hand-reared wombats into the wild.

It takes about $2,000 and months of love, commitment (and sometimes heartbreak) to rear an orphaned wombat ‘till it’s old enough to go back to the bush. But despite the dedication in rearing wombats, far less focus has been given to the optimum way to prepare hand-reared wombats for release.

EARLY INTERVENTION INTO ORPHANED ANIMALS

The Native Animal Rescue Group (NARG) is organising a new course “Early Intervention into Orphaned Animals” to be presented by Dr Howard Ralph (Veterinarian).

As many will know, Howard has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the treatment of wildlife.   Howard will present his ideas on how to cope with the problems that arise in caring for young animals (mammals and birds).

NARG Comes to Town
Written by Phil Machin
Braidwood's very own Native Animal Rescue Group has been formed.  NARG will act like other wildlife groups and it will fill the existing vacuum in the local area. The Vice President of NARG, Bill Waterhouse, says "NARG has been licensed by the Department of Environment and Climate Change to operate in the area bounded by Ballalaba to the south, through Braidwood and out to Sassafras in the north, Doughboy in the west through to the top of the Clyde in the east.

Having a locally focused group will benefit us much more than relying on the WIRES, NANA or Wildcare organisations, which are controlled from much further away and cover much larger areas.  The other problem we have had is that the Braidwood district is on the edge of these other wildlife group areas and they can't always meet this district's needs, so having NARG will be just right to fill the gap."
